Happy Tears

If anyone knows how to explain the word "humbled" to a 5-year-old and terms she can understand, please post a comment here 'cause I'd love to know!

This morning was fairly typical. I was doing my daily "chicken with her head cut off" routine around 7am -- simultaneously making lunch for Rachel and myself, trying to convince her to eat her breakfast sometime today, helping her pick out hair doo-dads and reading emails on my Blackberry, trying not to get THAT covered in strawberry jelly like my shirt already was. My husband and younger daughter had already left (20 minutes late!) for the day and I had 17 minutes to get Rachel and myself out, too. What I read on my daily Feedblitz email stopped me in my tracks.

My wonderful friend Julie (aka, The Surrendered Scribe) blogged yesterday about Character. You'll never guess who she chose to talk about. I'm humbled and grateful and very surprised.

I've cried before in front of my kids, there's no shame in that, I don't think. But this morning, I found myself trying to define "happy tears" and "humbled" to Rachel on the drive to school. I don't have the right words to describe those and I don't have the right words to describe how Julie's post made my day (week? month? year?). So Julie, THANK YOU, from the bottom of my heart.

Has someone made your day today? Did you tell them how much it meant to you? Or better yet, did you make someone else's day? If not, maybe now is a good time. I can tell you first hand how amazing it feels when someone sends a compliment your way.

Looks like a butterfly, feels like a ladybug

Though I am quite certain I do not deserve this award, I am tickled that my good friend Julie over at The Surrendered Scribe would pass it on to me. What a beautiful gesture from a really sweet, amazing woman, at a time when I really could use a ladybug (or ten). Yes, it may look like a butterfly, but it sure feels like a ladybug to me!

As you may have noticed from my lack of posting lately, life has been very, very busy for yours truly. My outside-the-home job is taking up way more of my time than I care to admit, and it's been a very busy, very stressful, very tiring past 6 weeks. I miss blogging terribly, on this blog most of all (I have 2 others). However, there is an end in sight (to the chaos at work) and I hope to get back to blogging more regularly within the next few weeks.

To all of you who read this blog, thank you, especially those of you who still check in to look for updates even when there haven't been any in a while. I'll be back.... I promise!

And thanks to Julie, for passing on a ladybug that really made my day!

Photo Friday: The Sender of the Ladybugs

I was brushing my teeth before bed last night when I remembered... August 28th... Seven years since Heaven welcomed Grandpa through it's gates. My first reaction was to be ashamed, that I hadn't remembered earlier in the day. My second reaction was that "ashamed" was the last reaction Grandpa would want me to have. He'd probably be thrilled that my life goes on, that my family goes on, that I go on. He knows how much I loved him, admired him, respected him, both then and for eternity. Nothing was unsaid between us, there are no regrets.
.
Take a look, that's him on the right. (Cute, isn't he?!?) The ladybug story didn't start with him, but he gave it meaning. He's the reason I feel it, believe it, and try my best to live it. He, my friends, is the sender of the ladybugs. In my heart, I know he's always dancing in the rain, and no one in Heaven or on Earth has more ladybugs beside them.

Photo Friday: My Something

We all have a "something"... a smell, a taste, a view, a blanket, a person... a "something" that reminds us to stop for a minute, take a look around, remember all that is good, all that is right, all that is important.
.
This is my something. This something always stops me in my tracks and reminds me to kick my priorities back in order. Little bug, lotta power.
.
What's your something?

Cool People & The USO

I'm Cool Because Cool People Care

I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the men and women who proudly and bravely serve our country. These are people who do a job that most of us wouldn't dream of doing. They leave their families, they put their lives on the line, and they do it with a bravery and dedication that most of us can't claim. Supporting them is not about politics, it's about patriotism.
-
One of my heroes (and I don't have many) is retired Brigadier General Joseph L. Shaefer (who I lovingly refer to as "General Joe.") His patriotism and friendship is unparalleled, and I'm proud to know him. He served 36 years in the US Army (PSYOP and Special Forces) and the US Air Force (Intelligence), both active and reserve.
-
I'm always looking for ways to support our troops, so I asked Joe which organization might be best suited to put my donations to good use. He recommended to me the USO.
-

The USO is a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is to support the troops by providing morale, welfare and recreation-type services to our men and women in uniform. The original intent of Congress — and enduring style of USO delivery — is to represent the American people by extending a touch of home to the military. The USO currently operates more than 130 centers worldwide, including ten mobile canteens located in the continental United States and overseas. Overseas centers are located in Germany, Italy, the United Arab Emirates, Japan, Qatar, Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan, Guam, and Kuwait. Service members and their families visit USO centers more than 5.3 million times each year. The USO is the way the American public supports the troops. (Quote taken from the USO website)

-
I've blogged here before about another one of my favorite organizations, CoolPeopleCare. The goal of this organization is to show us all how we can make a true difference in this world, every single day, in 5 minutes or less.
-
So when the CoolPeople offered me the chance to support both their organization AND a non-profit of my choice, and to also bring a benefit to my friends, family and readers, I jumped at the chance.
-
Starting today and continuing for forever, Dancing with Ladybugs has it's very own coupon code, which can be used to purchase merchandise from the CoolPeopleCare store. Using this code, you'll receive 5% off your purchase, and 5% will be donated to the USO. Their store offers t-shirts, eco-friendly products, books, stickers and fair-trade coffee, just to name a few items. I personally own pretty much one of everything, and I personally stand behind the quality of their products.
-
If you're in the market for any "green" items, if you'd like to support the USO, or even if you're just curious, go check out the CoolPeopleCare store. If you make a purchase, be sure to use the code LADYBUG at checkout, to receive your 5% discount and to make sure the 5% donation gets routed to the USO.
-
If you have any questions at all about the program, send me an email: DancingWithLadybugs [at] gmail.com.

Welcome to Dancing with Ladybugs

I think we all go through days where the weight of the world is heavy on our shoulders. Sometimes these days drag into weeks, sometimes months. There are times when life seems dark, ugly, stormy, where getting out of bed in the morning is more an obligation than a choice. Most of us eventually come out of the tunnel, though from inside, the light can be hard to see, and the journey can be long. Sometimes we turn to friends, family, God, or look deep within ourselves to find the courage and the strength and the motivation to keep moving in the right direction. Sometimes, though, it's hard to stay on the path, to find the light, and to follow it until it's within arm's reach. But when we emerge, the warmth of that light is beautiful, the sun through the clouds is the most magnificent, the rewards are the greatest.

Every adversity, though, provides the opportunity to learn a great life lesson. It's all about perspective, and sometimes you just need to know where to look for the inspiration to get you through. Sometimes it's a random event, a story of hope, even a little ladybug that can make all the difference. In a stormy, ugly world, we need to remember to that life is about dancing in the rain, not merely weathering the storm.

The impetus behind this blog started from an ugly event, one of those things that makes you feel sick to your stomach at how cruel the world can be. A friend of a friend knew two young men who were involved in a terrible accident, where one young man lost his life. The local news reported snippets within hours after it occurred, with very little information or facts available. The situation was tragic enough to begin with, but as I read some of the comments that had been posted to the article on the news site, I was appalled that some people could be so cruel, so judgemental, so heartless. In frustration, I told my friend Mel that I was annoyed to have to share air with some of these people. I probably should have prayed for them, but instead, I got angry. She and I began a conversation about ugly things in the world, and how hard they are to explain to our young daughters. How do we, as parents, shield our children from these things? How do we raise them to be good people and do good things when there are so many ugly influences in the world? How do we explain why people do bad things? How do we show them the good, the hope, the promise, the light, when there seem to be so many forces working against that?

The idea for this blog was born... a blog about the GOOD in the world. The hope. The inspiration. The promise. The light at the end of the tunnel that can provide you direction and pull you through.

The goal here is to include some original posts, links to other sites / blogs / stories that personify beauty in this sometimes ugly world and in addition, offer this space to guest bloggers who have stories and inspirations to share.

It may be a slow start, I'm a full-time-mom with a full-time-other-job, so time time isn't always on my side. However, having too many good things to blog about is really a positive, and I'm hoping to meet some new friends, inspire a few people, and maybe even pick up some help along the way!
